When the Going Gets Tough....(Growth Through Struggle!)

I recently travelled to a music studio owner's conference held in Memphis TN. It was held at the Guest House at Graceland, which was a real treat! I also took the opportunity to spend a couple of days in Nashville, where one of the items on my Bucket List got checked off - I was able to attend a concert at the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974, as well as spending quality time on Lower Broadway, were live music beckons from every door and window for blocks on end. Driving west to Memphis, I toured Sun Studios, where the great Sam Phillips discovered and recorded Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and, of course, the 19 year old Elvis Presley. Just before the Conference began, I took an amazing 3 hour guided tour of Graceland and the various exhibits in the museum across the street. Our tour guide, John, had met Elvis 8 times and was a wealth of information that really raised the experience to another level! I learned a great deal, but one thing I wanted to talk about is Elvis' motto: the initials TCB, underscored with a lightening bolt, which stands for Taking Care of Business in a Flash. All this means is: do the things you need to do, first. Don't procrastinate. I always tell my students to practice when they get home from school, before you do your homework (everyone knows you're going to get your homework done - wouldn't it be great if your practicing was already done?). Also, would you like to improve your homework performance? You’ve been in school all day - don’t sit down to your homework the minute you walk in the door. Practice your instrument, work through your new dance technique - you’ll get a re-set and approach your homework with a fresh mind. Some of my students schedule 15 minutes for practicing before school and then another 15 minutes when they arrive home after school. This is a great schedule! Others, unfortunately, leave it for the end of the day, and are often too busy or tired, and end up not practicing at all. Which describes your practice routine? Are you taking care of business? Elvis did, Sam Phillips certainly did, and you can, too! We all have 30 minutes a day - it's just a matter of how and when we schedule it.
