A Night at the Symphony (or Ballet) is for Everyone!

Some time ago, my friend Robert mentioned that he’d never been to the symphony, and had always wanted to go.  So for his birthday I took him to Davies Symphony Hall to hear Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.  There were two other symphonies performed, as well, by Haydn and Sibelius.  Robert really enjoyed the experience and would said he’d be happy to go again in the future.

If violinist/educator Nicola Benedetti had her way, Robert wouldn’t have needed to wait until his 40’s before he attended a classical music concert.  Benedetti has created no small controversy by writing that all youngsters should be exposed to classical music, whether they like it or not.

“It actually really upsets me when people say: ‘Kids hate listening to a symphony, why would we do that to them?’  Needing the child’s approval for what they do in school is just such an alien concept when you’re talking about math, science, history or English.  But, suddenly, when you bring music into the mix, it’s: ‘Oh no, we can’t show them anything that they don’t instantly love because that would be like forcing children into something that they don’t want to do.”

I agree.  We all have expectations of our kids.  That they get exposure to the arts (including various dance forms) isn’t any different than requiring that they finish their homework, keep their room clean, or eat their vegetables.

The arts don’t have to be stuffy and serious - they can be lots of fun, too!  Here’s a website listing many classical music events geared specifically to kids (several are free!): http://redtri.com/san-francisco/classical-concerts-for-kids-in-the-bay-area/

Let’s help our children explore dance and classical music.  They may not know it yet, but this is the good stuff!
